I need an electrician to replace an overhead fixture, and the company I have used before, Brothers Electric, seems to have gone out of business.

Can anyone recommend a good electrician, or a handyperson who could handle this?

For that matter, I need a plumber or handyperson to replace the flushing mechanism of a toilet. I've used Soderlin, but they are expensive.

No, I am not going to tackle either myself, unless someone wants to come over and talk me through it.

I have a really awesome handyperson named Rob Krajewski (it's pronounced cry-ev-ski). He will try just about anything, with the caveat being that (a) he charges much less than an electrician, plumber, or other person with specific skills in that area, but (b) it'll take him longer than the expert. That said, for these two jobs, I would bet a lot of money you'll come out ahead as he charges $20/hour. (He usually works with a woman named Vicki, who is skilled in similar areas, who also charges $20/hour. They're partners, solely in the work sense of partners. I think for a small job like this probably just one would come.) We've had them do all sorts of stuff for us, including repairing the foundation of our garage, adjusting the person-door and installing a new lock in it, and installing a new garage door opener; window repairs/painting; back door installation; front door finishing; and we're going to have them finish part of our basement starting in a week or two.

They are extremely nice. Rob's number is 651-261-7333. He might say he wants to come next week because he'll be in the area (i.e., my house) then, though (he lives in a north burb, so it's a bit of a drive to get down here).

We've been happy with Aqua City for plumbing. IIRC, they're somewhere on Nicollet Ave in the 3000-5000 range. If you call [livejournal.com profile] iraunink, she should be able to give you their phone number - IIRC, we've got it on the refrigerator somewhere.

Which is, of course, cheap. I'd be willing to talk you through doing it yourself. Or look at it to decide if it was worth trying. Both tasks can be very easy -- or not -- based in part on the conditions of the current fixtures.

Thanks

I think the light fixture is toast, and I think I'd better have a professional look at the wiring.

The plumbing, I need to look for my do-it-yourself book with the pictures and diagrams, and take another look. I am also lazy.

If I need advice, I may call you for a second opinion.

My brother is an excellent handyman, though I don't know if he is looking for more work or not right now. Ed: 612-599-8919.
