I have seen a whole potato fired at high speed into, and through, a sturdy metal mesh. (The zigzag screening that underlies a plaster wall was used.)

The shredded potato fragments that result are small, less than a centimeter, and they have a fairly wide dispersal pattern. One would need something larger than a dinner plate to collect them.

In the experiment I witnessed, the mesh was not flaming.

I suppose if you were able to keep the gasoline on the rim only, and off the mesh, it could work...
