I haven't been online, or reading - or writing - LJ, or much of anything. I have a furnace that was red-tagged by Minnegasco, I am trying to figure out if I *REALLY* have to buy a new furnace, or there is some way I could get the venting problem fixed without it. The furnace itself it okay, it's venting flue gases into the basement, so we can't run it, and the companies that have come out say buy a new furnace. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

I got "Fudoki" yesterday but haven't had time to start it. I'm too stressed to read a novel, so I must be VERY stressed. And I saw 9 more copies on a truck waiting to be paid for, so if anyone wants to get it from the Minneapolis Library, we have lots of copies. I saw a really good review, though I was planning on reading it anyway.

I signed up for NaNoWriMo. I hope I can actually go through with it. I am not good at dealing with crises.

Buy a new furnace. CO is not something you want to live with. Forced-air? Hot water? Minnegasco will probably give you an offer with financing, and there are other, cheaper places to get one.

I'm sorry to hear about your furnace.

Hey, I signed up for NaNoWriMo, too!

We have the furnace turned off, and are using space heaters.

I was hoping someone would say, "ABC company did a great job for me" or even, don't use "XYZ company, they do lousy work.". So far I am going on Angie's List and a couple of suggestions by friends.

I will get a 3rd estimate this afternoon, and decide this evening, I hope. But it's taking up time I have better uses for, and Martin has a bad cold, partly because of the (lack of) heat.

And I will find out in the next 2 weeks if I still have a job.

Stress??!!

I used Standard Heating and I've been happy, but it depends on whether you have forced-air or hot-water heat. They tend to specialize a bit.

Standard is one of the places I asked for a quote. A friend at work was alos pleased with their work.

Please mention either your friend or me. They have kickbacks... ;-)

Thoughts on heater

Are you on Minnegasco Service Plus? I had great luck with them coming out and tweaking my furnace until it got under the max CO levels. I told the guy that yes, I was eventually going to replace my furnace but I couldn't afford to do it right now, and could they PLEASE make it last the winter. They did this for the first several years I owned the house, before I got enough savings to replace the boilers. Minnegasco red-tagged me two years (out of the 3-5 between when I bought the house and when I replaced the furnaces) when doing the furnace inspection, but then came and fixed the problem both times as part of my service plus. And the other years, they fixed it and tweaked it as part of the inspection.

When you are ready to replace the furnace, I had a really great experience with the contractor I used. They did a splendid job, and if they were a little contractor-like (not wanting to comment on what they were doing while doing it), I can't really blame them for that, I like to concentrate too.

Once they were paid, they did not do some of the follow up that I wanted (tweaking the thermostat so it didn't suddenly overheat the apartment if I got too close to 70 degrees, and coming back to fix a loose connection I found and ended up fixing myself), but the work was very cleanly done. If interested, I will give you the info when I get home.

Yes, please let me know who you used. I am not on the Minnegasco service plan. I had someone come out preliminary to going on it, because I was afraid they would look at my equipement and say it was too old to work on.

Maybe we can talk about it tomorrow or Saturday.
