Over the weekend, I went to the Wi-Poly (Wisconsin Polyamory) Campout down near the Wisconsin Dells. I'm going to post in stages, but this part isn't about poly.

It was 2:20 by the time we left. The drive down was awful in both senses. It rained much of the way, and the windshield wiper on the driver's side doesn't work properly. Traffic was heavier than I expected through St. Paul, even though it was before 3 pm. It stayed heavy well past Hudson. Ran into a traffic jam near Menominee because of construction and an accident. And the rest stop there was closed, so we stopped at an Kwik-stop near an exit, got snacks, and changed drivers. We switched again at a rest stop, near Black River Falls, I think. Just as well, because we ran into even worse delays around Tomah. Again, construction. There were flashing signs that said 30 minute delay, but I didn't quite believe them, and didn't know what else to do besides stay on 94. So we crept along at 15-20 miles per hours for about 10 minutes, grousing all the way. We were already running late, and I was worried dinner would be over by the time we arrived.

Then, gradually, around 4 o'clock, the sun came out, brighter and brighter. Looking north and east, there was The Rainbow. This was the most incredible, beautiful, textbook rainbow I have seen in many many years. It was huge, and bright. A double rainbow, and we could se the whole of both bows for a while. This was beyond beautiful, it was magical, it was a phenomena. Since we were, in effect, parked, I could gawk at it as well as Martin, opening my window to see better, since it was on my side of the road. I wished I'd had a camera, but I don't think any camera I would have could have done it justice. This was the Ur-Rainbow, a double of the one that appeared to Noah (if you'll pardon the Biblical allusion). Martin pointed out the darkened area between the bows, because the light is concentrated in the bows. He could see the indigo line in the inner bow, but I couldn't. For once, I enjoyed being in a delayed. As traffic finally sped up, we were driving towards one end for a while, and joked about whether we would find a pot of gold. Gradually, it faded, starting with the outer bow. Just as well, because by that time I was back up to speed, and couldn't let it distract me, less we be crushed by the semis going seventy.

Got to Mauston, and I was fretting again. We left 94, and took Hwy 82 to 13, and 13 down to avoid the Dells traffic. Martin knows that area very well. Once we arrived, things started falling into place. There was plenty of food – corn, brats, potato salad, and excellent, fresh from the oven, homemade chocolate chip cookies. I ended up in a small room by myself, and was quite comfortable.

And it rained most of the weekend, but that's for part two.

ooooohhhhh....

Having driven those roads in all flavors of weather, including INCREDIBLY heavy rain, I can empathize.
That road is also where I first saw Aurora Borealis on my way to my first non-local SCA event in 1978; we drove at night.

Love hearing about the double rainbow you got to see. Thank you! *wiggles toes*
