at work

I am hoping I can post something in bits and pieces from work, since right now no one is actually watching me. I have had NO time at home.

I'd forgotten how much full time work soaks up EVERY BIT OF TIME AND ENERGY. I spent the weekend doing chores and trying, unsuccessfully, to recharge.

I hate this job already, and I've only been here 4 days. Last night I was cursing myself for even applying for a full-time job. But I need the money and benefits. I keep telling myself, a few years, and then, maybe I can really retire, and write.

I did get ot the Gnostic Mass on Saturday, but it was so hot and sticky I didn't really get as much out of it as usual. Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight was actually more rewarding. That movie is my touchstone, and it is so fun to watch Robin's enthusiasm.

I need to schedule time for myself alone, and time for Martin and myself. This weekend, I got very little of either.

And in case anyone is wondering why I am working - Hamline University does not observe Labor Day as a holiday. Classes start Wednesday, so some staff need to work today to get ready, I guess. Since I'm new, I have no floating holiday or vacation time to use. There is no union, though benefits are, on the whole, much better than Minneapolis Public Library, with a union.

The walls are closing in.....

you're at Hamline?

Sometime, go across the street and peek at the stained-glass windows in the methodist church, and tell me what weavings might be hanging behind the altar - they're probably my mom's (they have full sets of dossal tryptics for the liturgical year of her tapestry work).

That's the church I grew up going to 'cos the music was so grand. Earl Barr's dead long years now but I'll bet whoever gets to play that full pipe organ has as much fun with it as ever...

Pace yourself, dearling.

I'm sorry to hear that you're hating your new job. I hope it turns out to be better when you've had a chance to adjust.

(I'm hating my present job, too, but it's just a temp assignment, which makes it easier to cope.)

I hope it gets to seeming better, once you've adjusted to the "full time" element and once you've gotten thoroughly trained in to their systems, routines, bureaucratic paperwork etc so it becomes second nature. Before I started this job, I had a several month hiatus from work, getting ready to move and then, after we got here, while I looked for work. It was hard for me to get back into the routine of having to go off and sell myself every M-F morning when that is my best, most energetic and creative time of the day. I still wake up some mornings and curse the fact that I'm not independently wealthy.

Give Hamline a chance. I think they're a good place overall. Several of our NM FOR people have been on their faculty or been students -- Don Irish (retired) and Duane Cady (who I mentioned before -- look him up if you get a chance).

I will keep you in my thoughts, and also River and Charles, and Faun and Doc as they still very much need jobs.

Hang in there, Magenta. It usually gets easier with time, though I find as I get older it takes longer to adjust. Guard your free time jealously - time's all you've got, so don't feel guilty about skipping some chores in order to make time for yourself or to spend with Martin.
