I should explain for people who don't know us well, my partner, Martin, is wheat intolerant. Can't eat bread, pasta, etc. Including pizza. He cheats occasionally, and hopes it doesn't upset his digestion too much. But pizza on a regular basis is one thing he misses.
We just got back from Spokes - they have SPELT pizza. Martin can eat it. Spokes is a separate collective which rent the Seward Cafe space Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights; that space is very familiar and pleasant for me.
The pizza was wonderful. Excellent crust, plenty of cheese and sauce, real mushrooms in big chunks, caramelized onions – Wow! – and good green olives. That came to $13.65 for 12 inch, a bit pricey but worth it. And they offered us a sample of an apple turnover they are putting on the menu in a few weeks. That was spelt based and excellent as well, very rich. One between the two of us was just right for a little bit of dessert. It did take a half hour, which is what they said it would take, and pizza tends to take a while. I may want to start going out for pizza on Thursday nights whenever possible. Not every week, but often.
I want to let everyone know about it, because this is a small operation, and I don't think they publicize it a lot. They also deliver, in a limited area, on bicycles, hence the name. They have been around for a year, but I only heard about them recently.
Oh, for other people who are erratic Seward customers, or former customers and workers (Hi Frank and Mary!) the Seward has put in new booths, and it looks very nice. The booths are a very light colored wood, and the place looks brighter because of it.
